Come on by, do some Site-Seeing!

Unexpected audience

“The intended audience matters, regardless of the actual audience”

“teens must grapple with who can see their profile, who actually does see it, and how those who do see it will interpret it.”

“the internet could—and would—free people of the burdens of their “material”—or physically embodied—identities, enabling them to become a better version of themselves. ” – Turkle

Quiet reflection

For my fifteen minutes of quiet reflection I chose to go to the cliff overlooking the beach on campus. I think it went pretty well as I was able to unwind for a bit and not think about anything else, it was pretty relaxing. I think one of the main reasons it was so relaxing was the fact that I didn’t bring my phone with me so there wasn’t the distraction of notifications and the urge to constantly look at my phone. It took me back to at time before I had a phone, when I was a kid, when I didn’t worry about anything and was care free.

Sherry Turkle’s Ted Talk

After listening to Sherry’s ted talk about social media technology I believe that her main point is that social media changes who we are as people. Sherry has interviewed hundreds of people and the evidence shows that our devices have so much psychological influence on us that they effect what we do and what we act like. She mentions how things that would have seemed odd even a few years ago are now normal and accepted like texting during corporate board meetings, students text and go on facebook during classes, and having trouble making eye contact. Clearly the evidence shows that social media and the all powerful cell phone are changing who we are as people and mainly for the worst.

Revision reflection #1

My revising process for this particular essay was a lot different than that of essays I wrote in high school. The main difference being I did not fall in love with my first draft and instead I scrapped large portions of it, added chunks and moved parts around to make the overall structure make more sense. I would count this step as evaluating as I made changes to my essay so that it better met the standards of the assignment.I also used the constructive criticism I received from my classmates to improve my paper which is something I am not used to as the typical comments I would receive on my papers would be all positive leaving me no room or ideas on how to improve my paper. To me this step is analyzing as I viewed my paper in parts highlighted by my peers and I then changed and made corrections piece by piece until my paper made more sense and flowed better. I believe this was the most helpful tool during the revision process as it helped me narrow down things I really needed to improve on and the things that I got right. Overall I am satisfied with my final draft. I think it is structured coherently, addresses the prompt, ties Dweck, bain and my experiences together and provides a thoughtful analysis on who I am as a learner and it gave me the foundation I needed to make a podcast about myself as a learner, I would consider this step to be creating.

Learning style podcast

Translating my essay content into a podcast was actually quite difficult, the minimum time requirement was two minutes so I tried to not go too far over that which meant I had to condense a lot of my thoughts into quicker and to the point ideas. My podcast ended up being about five minutes but if I had unlimited time I probably would have taken about ten minutes to get all my ideas, my experiences and connections between Bain and Dweck. I am overall satisfied with the final product as I added some uniqueness to the podcast by calling my mom and using her to gain insight on myself as a learner. I’d say overall the podcast took me two to two and a half hours to complete, not including the time it took me to understand how to use the audacity software through experimenting and watching tutorial videos.

Podcast Elements

I chose to listen to a podcast about Susan Cuddy, the first Asian woman to enlist in the navy. Overall I liked how the podcast was structured, the opening introduced the story, the interaction between interviewer and guests seemed genuine as there was laughing and a back and forth, the outro music gives a sense of finality and the brief summary at the end of the podcast reminds you of the key elements. I believe I could use most of these elements in my podcast, however their is no one being interviewed so the back and forth and the outro summary are probably not going to fit in my podcast.

Critique Reflection #1

Overall I liked the new approach to peer and self revision we used in class. The highlighting method helped me realize what components I had and what components were missing or lacking. Additionally the peer comments I received helped me realize what I was doing well and what I needed to improve upon or make clearer to the reader. I hope that the comments I made are just as helpful to my peers as theirs were to me.
